  • The start of the 2023/24 Premier League season is two weeks away
  • Champions Manchester City will open the season against newly-promoted side Burnley
  • Pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have had their say on the favourites ahead of the new season

The new Premier League season is only days away, but pundits have started picking their favourites ahead of the new season, and it could be bad news for some top clubs.

Manchester City won their third consecutive Premier League title last season despite Arsenal spending the most days at the top of the table but capitulated near the end.

It was the fifth crown for Pep Guardiola in seven seasons in English football, and he capped it off brilliantly with the club's first UEFA Champions League trophy, culminating in a treble.

Last season's runner-up Arsenal have strengthened their squad remarkably well with over £200m worth of talents, including Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber.

Man City picked as favourites

Former Premier League stars and pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have had their say on the favourites for the title next season, and both favour the Citizens to retain their crown for the fourth consecutive time.

They also had their views on how their former teams will fare next season, and both predicted top-four finishes.

“It’s all dependent on the budget. Under the owners the club has had, I think they’ll probably still finish in the top four, but I don’t think they’ll improve on it,” Neville told FourFourTwo of Manchester United.

The Red Devils have recruited Mason Mount and Andre Onana and agreed on a deal for striker Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta last night, as reported by The Athletic.

“I think Liverpool will be in the top four. They signed Alexis Mac Allister early on. They were awful last season and were still in with a shout of the top four with two or three games to go, which I couldn’t believe,” Carragher said.

The Reds will need heavy investment in midfield due to the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

Merson predicts PL winner

Sports Brief reported that Arsenal legend Paul Merson picked Manchester City as the favourites to win the Premier League title again next season.

Merson believes his former club Arsenal will give City a run for their money, but their depth on the bench will make the difference between the two sides.
